Castro Valley

Castro Valley is an unincorporated community in the hills of central Alameda County, between Hayward and the Tri-Valley, with a boulevard-centered commercial strip and hillside residential neighborhoods.

At a glance

  • Where it is: unincorporated Alameda County, along Interstate 580 and Castro Valley Boulevard.
  • Known for: Lake Chabot, canyon parks, and a long commercial boulevard rather than a traditional downtown.
  • The environment: suburban and hilly, with a semi-rural feel in the canyon areas.
  • What sets it apart: it is not a city — Alameda County provides local government and permitting.

Housing character

  • Post-war single-family homes across much of the area.
  • Hillside properties with larger lots and views.
  • Some newer developments, particularly on the eastern side.

What to check

  • Hillside and canyon areas have wildfire designations that affect insurance availability and cost.
  • Interstate 580 noise affects nearby blocks.
  • Some canyon properties have private road, well, or septic considerations.
  • Verify current transportation service, school assignment, permit requirements, hazard information, and total housing costs for the specific address.
